I’m searching for some sort of meaningful way to write to you today- some way to offer safety, permission, or maybe joy, communion. But the day comes extra eerily timed after a bill passed in this country that takes needed recourse and care from both people and the planet. So I guess I’ll start by hanging my warmly hat today on this Baldwin quote: “I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.” —James Baldwin
So here are some things here that I love: I love the kind, dedicated communities who have shaped, nurtured, challenged, and held me throughout my life in this country. I love the breathtaking landscapes - the Rockies I grew up in, the Pacific Ocean coasts, the forsts I watched out a car window coming upstate this weekend, and the birds I hear outside right now. I love the expression and true care of the greatest city in the world. I love living in a country and a city of immigrants. And I love it all enough to be angry for it.
I’ll never tell you not to be angry - but, remember, too, (if it helps) to show love to the very things you care enough about to be angry for.
Speaking of living in a place made wonderful by immigrants, we have a community fundraiser coming up that I’d love to invite you too…
9 local songwriters will sit writers’ round style playing original music as we sit to take it all in. 100% of tickets will be donated to help provide free legal services to reunify families and assist low-income immigrants in obtaining lawful status, applying for citizenship, defending against deportation, and more. I think it will feel really good to gather this way, and I would love to see some warmly readers there.
